A watermelon on the southwestern beach in Shadow of the Colossus (PS4).
Watermelon is a recurring item in ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, appearing either as a hidden item or easter egg. In every instance it is found on a white-sand beach bordered by steep cliffs.
ICO[]
In non-U.S. releases of ICO, the player can access a hidden "watermelon ending" in which the protagonist Ico can bring Yorda a watermelon from near where his boat landed. In the cutscene that follows, the two will sit side by side as they watch the waves, eating watermelon together.
There are no special requirements for this ending, save that the game be a PAL release and that the game has already been completed once before.
According to the ICO guidebook, the watermelon originally was going to be an item that could be thrown as a weapon at enemies, or be broken and eaten recovering health. However, the idea was never used, and the watermelon was only added at the last minute as a fun item.
Shadow of the Colossus[]
While there were no special easter eggs (beyond the Queen's Sword) for ICO in the PS2 and PS3 releases of Shadow of the Colossus, BluePoint's PS4 remake introduced a watermelon on the southwest beach of the Forbidden Lands, below the 10th colossus' lair. Likewise, they also added a barrel easter egg for The Last Guardian in the Autumn Forest (Forest of Giants).
