Pelagia is the twelfth colossus, found within a large lake in quadrant G2.

Path to the Colossus

See also: Map for this path

Pelagia's lair is northeast of the shrine, so you will want to turn left when exiting this time. Hold up the sword once you're in the sunlight to get an idea of where to head. Look for two stone pillars in this direction to find a land bridge. Cross it and head along the eastern cliffside to find another set of pillars, indicating another bridge. Crossing this bridge, however, will put you in the middle of an enclosed forest. It's easy to get lost in here if you don't know the way, but fortunately the way through couldn't be simpler. As soon as you enter the forest, take a sharp right turn to find the exit close by. Once you're outside, take a sharp left turn to find a narrow path leading to the lake above the Misty Falls. Eventually, you will reach what appears to be a dead-end, as a giant boulder has long since wedged itself between the cliffs and a pillar on the other side of the path. This pillar, however, has a ledge you can work your way across, leaving Agro behind. Don't jump into the water just yet, or you run the risk of being forced into the strong currents of the upper waterfalls, and falling off them means death. You may wish to save at the nearby shrine. Jump off the ledge on the other side to find another path. Follow this path until it ends, then jump into the lake below. Swim north, past the pillars, and set foot on one of the ruins dotting the lake.

Walkthrough

Watch Pelagia's tusks; if they turn bright, seek cover. The colossus will often attack by shooting a highly-damaging pulse of energy from these tusks; though they appear electrical in nature, you will not be harmed if you dive underwater. You need to get onto the colossus's head first, even though there is no sigil. There are two ways to do this.

The easier, but more time-consuming, method is by swimming around him and climbing up its mossy back. This is easier if you remain hidden (underwater) for as long as possible. The more difficult, but quicker, method involves taking cover on land. Pelagia will get curious eventually and will put its two front limbs up on the structure to get a better look. You can use this opportunity to jump onto one of the many "rims" on its head. (See the video for an example of how to do it). Be careful; it's a difficult jump to pull off.

You won't find a weakspot on the colossus's head, but you will find strange molar-shaped stones around its rim. Hitting these with your sword reveals something unusual: the colossus will either turn or go in the direction respective to the position of the stone you hit. Use this to steer the colossus towards one of the many covered ruins. Jump to the rooftop of the ruin when you're as close as the colossus will go, and quickly take cover behind the central stub (expect to be attacked very shortly after your landing).

When you're hidden from view, Pelagia will sink into the water before lunging out at you onto the platform. This will expose a small patch of fur on its belly, and its sole weakspot. After a few good stabs, the colossus will destroy the ruin and you'll have to direct it towards another one to repeat the process.

Explanation of the Riddle

Dormin's Riddle: "Thy next foe is... Paradise floats upon the lake... A silent being wields thunder... A moving bridge to higher ground."

The first part of the riddle refers to Pelagia's location. The second tells of Pelagia's silent behaviorism, but simultaneously of its treacherous attack. Thunder and lightning are directly associated, and claiming it "wields thunder" may hint to the player that Pelagia incorporates electricity as means of defending itself. The final statement is quite straight-forward: it speaks of an animate object and as Pelagia is the only moving creature in the area (excluding Wander), it is obvious that the player must use it as transportation for reaching a higher vantage point, e.i. one of the gazebo-like rock structures.

Tips & Tricks

  • Pelagia may try moving around the platform Wander is on. One can tell when it is going to do this. Its tusks will turn bright, but it will not shoot; that is the signal. The played should try moving at the pace Pelagia is in so it does not find Wander.
  • Since Wander can only get in two stabs before Pelagia goes back underwater, it is recommended that the player charges them up to their maximum power before stabbing Pelagia's sigil. This is a big help on Time Attack.

Origin of given and Latin name

Note that both the given names and the Latin names of the colossi are fictional. They are only used by fans due to the popularity of these names and are not official.

Pelagia

  • Pelagia is derived from the Greek word meaning "Open Sea"

Permagnus Pistrix

  • Permagnus is an adaptation of magnus ("great" or "large"). The perm- prefix added means "very." Used in this manner, it can mean "the greatest."
  • Pistrix is a Latin word that means "sea monster." It has been used to refer to whales, sharks, and saw-fish. It is related to the Latin word piscis which means "fish." In this sense, "Permagnus Pistrix" can be translated to mean "The Greatest Sea Monster".

Trivia

  • Pelagia is the only colossus that does not have eyes. The tips of Pelagia's tusks serve as its eyes instead; they change color from blue to orange when attacking, like the eyes of all the other colossi.
  • Pelagia doesn't actually swim. Rather, it walks along the bottom of the lake, similar to how hippopotamus move through the water.
  • Pelagia's horns resemble Quadratus' horns. These two colossi also have body resemblance.
  • Dormin says in his description of Pelagia that "a paradise floats upon the lake, a silent being wields thunder, a moving bridge to cross higher ground". The first part probably refers to the moss on Pelagia's back that makes it look like a floating island. The second part refers to Pelagia's electrical blasts. The third part probably refers to climbing Pelagia's back to reach the elevated platforms.
  • Pelagia's stance is quite gorilla like, with two short rear legs and two long arms.
  • Like Phaedra, Pelagia possesses a set of skeletal ribs protruding from its underbelly.
  • Pelagia stands at roughly 89 ft/27.1m high with an estimated total length of 100 ft/30.5m, making it the joint fourth tallest along with Phaedra. Only Malus, Quadratus and Gaius are taller.
  • Pelagia has the longest introductory sequence of all the colossi, at roughly 42 seconds long.
  • Pelagia makes some vaguely bull-like roars and bellows during the time Wander fights it.
  • After being defeated, Pelagia's body is seen sinking to the depths of the lake in which it resided. However, upon revisiting the lake after Pelagia has fallen, its body will have risen to the surface again. This is so that the player can enter Reminiscence mode if they wish to do so. This is also true of Avion and Hydrus.
  • Pelagia probably has the strangest and most alien appearance out of all the colossi. It has a shell like a turtle, but the stature of a gorilla, and tusks, something that is not found on any species of turtle or gorilla. Furthermore, the rocks on its head resemble teeth, which can imply that Pelagia's head is actually a bottom jaw, yet there doesn't appear to be any way for that to be possible. A close inspection of Pelagia's tusks shows that they aren't actually tusks, as they appear to be made out of the same material as Pelagia's helmet-like face.
  • When the distances between individual colossi are compared, the straight line distance between Pelagia and Argus is the smallest, making Pelagia and Argus the closest colossi 'neighbours'.
  • If you get Pelagia to get close enough to one of the ruined platforms, you can go on the bottom part and jump on his head.
  • You can direct Pelagia's movement by shooting its molar-like bones with arrows or whacking them with your sword.
  • Pelagia's only fur is on its belly. The 'fur' on its back is actually moss. Pelagia's fur does have the same dark green color as regular moss.
  • There is a glitch with Pelagia. After you defeat Pelagia, if you hold R1 during its death cutscene, you can keep holding onto its belly until the black tentacles hit you.
  • Although very difficult, it is possible to swim under Pelagia and grab onto its belly underwater.
  • You can also glitch into Pelagia by constantly swimming against the right side of its body, near the arm.
