Project logo
NICO remodel (originally known as SOTC-HD) was the first major undertaking by fans to improve upon the original, PS2 release of Shadow of the Colossus. Like Beyond the Forbidden Lands, the project was a fan-made and existed as a non-profit title. It was developed for the PC.
As of January 1st, 2022, the project leader "Storm", had announced that Nico Remodel was offically canceled, and would no longer be seeing development. As well as the deletion of the discord server soon. Storm cited that deveploment was canceled due to costs being to high, other projects iwth similar goals having much better foundations and ultimately the project becoming financially unsustainable, among many other reasons he discussed in the then recently Q&A he held on his server.
Storm ended his message by expressing high hopes in the potential of the other fan projects: 'Tribute to SotC', 'Project NICO' (now renamed to Project Maya), and 'Beyond the Forbidden Lands' and directed his community to follow those projects.
About the name[]
"Nico" (stylized "NICO") was a working title for Shadow of the Colossus during the game's early development and was used until the final title was released. ICO was Shadow's predecessor and Fumito Ueda's first title, so with "Ni" as Japanese for the number two, "Nico" implied that Shadow was a sort of "second Ico". In a continuation of referencing Ico in a game's working title, Ueda's third game The Last Guardian used "Trico", both implying that is was a third Ico and revealing the name of one of its protagonists. Thus, the name for the NICO remodel is in keeping with this tradition.
