Kubinaga (首長, lit. long neck) is an archetypical unused colossus, it's name first discovered in the data sheets.

Description[]

This colossus has a texture segment, however it is empty with no textures listed.

Fumito Ueda mentions in the artbook that he wanted a long-necked bird, and this colossus' name is similar to the way Ueda refers to Roc, being "首が長い - Kubi ga nagai".[1] It's possible that Kubinaga is the colossus featured in the "Bird III" sketch, as it has several elements that are also similar to Roc.

It had thin wings with runes similar to the ones in Roc's frill, meaning it's possible they were weakpoints. Its head was pointy and had a swirly design on its side. The only fur appears to be on its neck.

After Kubinaga was rejected, it's likely that it was one of the designs that were merged into Roc later on.

Location[]

On July 15th 2016, Nanako Ohmura, a field designer who made several of the early iterations of boss arenas, posted on her twitter an image containing "several nostalgic things" according to her. Among these things, a stack of papers can be seen. The top page is an apparent early battle specification for Phoenix, however, sticking out from under it, several bookmarks for other pages can be seen. These read "ヤモリ" (Yamori), "ウナギ" (Unagi) and "首長" (Kubinaga).

One interesting thing about these pages is they are seemingly organized in the same order as the boss test stages. Phoenix is stage 8, Yamori is stage 9 and Unagi is stage 10. Logic would follow that Kubinaga was in stage 11, however the PS3 data sheets indicate that stage 11 housed Yamori A's Sluice stage. That being said, by the time the documents in the photo were created, Yamori had not yet been revised and so stage 09 likely still housed the Sluice stage as evidenced by the "st09_sluice_floor_camra_region" texture segment. This seemingly suggests that Kubinaga was originally tested in stage 11, before being cut early on and its stage later replaced with the Sluice stage once Yamori A was created.

Trivia[]

  • Kubinaga is misspelled as "Kubunaga" in the "se-frame-table".[2]
