LightWave3D models of the Castle Soldiers.
The Castle Soldiers were the primary enemies in the PlayStation 1 version of ICO.
They were replaced by the Shadows once development on the game was moved to the PS2. They were replaced because the Shadows were capable of appearing and disappearing anywhere, thus being easier to add to stages.[1]

The Castle Soldiers were planned to come in different types, denoting their rank and purpose. They all seemed to carry swords, and each of them had a helmet with different shaped horns. Their objective, like the Shadows, was capturing Yorda, as in a clip one is seen carrying her, although it is unknown where they would bring her.

A piece of concept art displays the names of four types of Castle Soldiers:
- Officer (top left)
- Sergeant (top right)
- Soldier (bottom left)
- Veteran (bottom right)
Each of the Castle Soldier ranks apparently had their own roles:
- Officer: A high quality render of the cut Machine Gun shows an Officer manning it. It's therefore possible that Ico would need to defeat the Officer before being able to use the gun.

- Sergeant: It is unknown what role the Sergeant would fill, however their name suggests they would lead regular Soldiers in combat.
- Soldier: The regular Soldier, as seen in gameplay footage, would attack Ico and attempt to kidnap Yorda.
- Veteran: The Veteran would do odd-jobs around The Castle, such as checking the torches and cleaning.[2]
Only the regular Soldier and a fat one, not presented in concept art or early renders, are shown in gameplay. It's unknown if the rest were ever added to the game.
