" Souls that are once lost cannot be reclaimed. Is that not the law of mortals? With that sword, however, it may not be impossible. " Dormin

Wander using the Ancient Sword to find the colossi

The Ancient Sword is Wander's primary weapon in Shadow of the Colossus.

The Ancient Sword was used many years ago to seal Dormin away within the Forbidden Lands. Wander, upon learning of the power of the Dormin, stole the sword to enable him to use the Forbidden Spell and revive Mono.

The sword has the ability to "gather light" and show the location of active colossi. Wander holds it up in the sunlight to activate this ability. The light will scatter when he is pointed away from the colossus, but those points of light will gather when he aims at them. When near the colossus, these beams of light point out magic sigils on the colossus's body.

The close-up of the Ancient Sword at the end of the game

The sword is fairly small, but like the other two swords of the game, their power in killing a colossus increases as Wander's strength increases. In the normal difficulty, with both the Cloak of Force and either the Mask of Power or the Mask of Strength equipped, the Ancient Sword becomes equivalent in power to the Queen's Sword. The reason the Queen's Sword was created was because since the hard difficulty clothing items focus on defensive abilities, it would otherwise be impossible to get a sword of such power. The Ancient Sword is the only sword seen in cutscenes, regardless of the previous weapon that was equipped (with the exception of the cutscene that follows absorbing a colossus's spirit).
